Performance:   Sonics:
In spite of good-but-not-great multichannel sonics, this is now my favorite Tchaik. 4. Jarvi does indeed pay attention to performing this work, and I LOVE his slower-than-normal tempos in the slower sections. The sonics are a little shallow and not as transparent as the best DSD recordings, and Michael Bergek did not capture nearly as much hall sound as I prefer. The perspective did not sound too distant for me; in fact the woodwinds almost always sound a little too close.*

The Serenade for Strings is very good, and I love this work. The Gothenberg orchestra sounds good in the Symphony but VERY good in this Serenade. The Elegy... is a nice bonus that I enjoyed, and hearing this is LOTS better than being served, for instance, another histrionic 'Romeo and Juliette'.

* Interesting how our standards change. We Classical-music lovers would have been raving about this recording 20 or 30 years ago, when most of what we got shoved down our throats (ears?) were the multimono-miced messes from Columbia, RCA, etc. and that we STILL get from DG.
