Here is a program that is both original and pertinent, grouping works for flute, with accompaniment, by five female composers. Five women whose composing originality is not the only interesting element of this beautiful pure DSD recording. Five women whom the young flutist Emily Beynon stands up for with brio. As principal flutist for the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, she sets herself apart by playing in which softness, subtlety and virtuosity combine into heartfelt, perfectly respired phrases. The menu is delectable: with a work by Hilary Tann (b. 1947) for flute, alto and harp based on “The Song of Amergin”, written in 1995, “Theme and Variations” by Amy Beach (1867-1944) for flute and string quartet, written in 1916, “Words for My Daughter” for flute and piano by Sally Beamish (b. 1956), “Impromptu” by Thea Musgrave (b. 1928) for flute and oboe, and finally Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) and her Trio Op. 45 for flute, cello and piano. Needless to say, everything on this disc breathes musical delight. All the artists here assembled share the same passion for rare scores that are of translucent beauty in an often melancholic universe. Emily Beynon, with much refinement, opens doors to a realm, that of the flute, in which it is clear much has yet to be heard. Quite simply, this disc is a must.
