Performance:   Sonics:
This was the first of the Stones SACD's I picked up and I was fairly impressed by the sonics right off the bat. I was, however, dissapointed that the original Dave Hassenger (RCA studios, Hollywood) mix wasn't used for the stereo "Satisfaction". A late '70's remix was used instead. Now it doesn't sound bad (It actually sounds excellent) but it isn't the correct stereo mix last seen on the German mid '80's "Hot Rocks vol I". Also the stereo versions of "Get Off My Cloud" and "Play With Fire" is MIA and the stereo "19th Nervous Breakdown" has yet to be released period. But in all fairness those stereo mixes weren't that great as the vocals were waay up front and the band was waaay down so it's more than likely better they remain mono. The stereo "Heart Of Stone" however is here complete with Dave Hassinger's trademark murk (rolled off highs and alot of reverb).
Now the tracks "Time Is On My Side" and "It's All Over Now" sound fantastic in their stereo incarnations. "Time..." has a snap in the drums that I never really noticed in the mono. In comparison to the stereo RCA studio tracks, all the stereo tracks I've heard that were recorded at Chess studios in Chicago sound great. Very clear and alive sounding.
The remainder of the tracks were recorded in London and are mono (and will ever so remain as all sessions in London were recorded that way until about '66) and sound fine as they are, if a little bass shy.
On the whole this is a fine sounding release and a good primer for anyone new to the Stones who doesn't want to spring the extra $ for "Hot Rocks". A good toe dipper.

I'm biased. This was my first Stones album and I only owned one other, Beggar's Banquet. I've played it hundred's of times. I had to buy this SACD and I love it. I've now listened to this at least 20 times--usually in my car. Can't compare to the album. I lost it over 20 years ago.

This is one of my top 10 favorate SACDs. Nuff said. Sonics probably are a 4, but I love this album too much to rate it a 4.

Even though I have every song on the compilation a few times over it is just a great collection of early Stones ! As with all the ABKCO SACD releases the sound transfer is top notch with extremely clear sound and instrument separation and an overall warm sound. On this compilation they stuck with the mono mix of "Satisfaction" which I prefer.
This is an essential SACD to own if you are a fan of the Stones !
