This is another in the extended series of fascinating musico-historical voyages of exploration and discovery by Jordi Savall, together with his trusty Hesperion XXI and Capella Reial de Catalunya bands. As always, it is immaculately researched, performed and recorded, and makes a profound impact on many levels.
This double album, accompanied by a sumptuous multi-lingual book, centres on Christopher Columbus and the crucial year of 1492. Perhaps unexpectedly, it is shot through with a sense of loss and melancholy. 1492 was not just the year when Columbus ‘sailed the ocean blue’, of course; it also marks the conquest of Granada and the forced expulsion of the Jews of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella. Some years later, this was followed by the violent conversion of the Moors in the kingdoms of Castille.
Let us not forget, moreover, that this year marked the start of a brutal process of exploitation, subjugation and extermination of the native cultures of South and Central America. These events echo throughout the music, and also give the set its core theme and subtitle- ‘Lost Paradises’.
So, in addition to much Moorish and Sephardic music, we also hear the music of the conquering kingdoms of medieval Spain and hints of the cultures of ‘the New World’. There is even some Sybiline Graeco-Roman chant prophesying the discovery of a new land beyond Ultima Thule. This is all eclectic and ultimately fascinating.
For me, however, the musical and emotional highlights of these discs are the heart-wrenching Arabo-Andalusian and Sephardic/Jewish songs of lament for their lost homes, sung both immaculately and sensuously by Montserrat Figueras. The impact of these songs is further reinforced by the transparent and natural sound quality achieved throughout. Although it may sound a touch hackneyed, one actually feels that she is in the room with you. Spooky - but wonderful.
In short, this is state-of-the art-sound.
So, if you have enjoyed other recordings in this series, or have any interest in expanding your musical horizons, I can wholeheartedly commend this set to you.

Après un remarquable et indispensable hommage rendu au Don Quichotte de Cervantès, pour commémorer le Vème Centenaire de la mort de Christophe Colomb, Jordi Savall, Montserrat Figueras, Hespèrion XXI et La Capella Reial de Catalunya se penchent sur le plus célèbre des explorateurs. Né à Gênes en 1450, fils d'un tisserand, ce dernier découvre l'Amérique après plusieurs voyages qui le menèrent notamment à Cuba, Haïti, la Guadeloupe et au Honduras. Intitulé "Paradis Perdus", le voyage auquel Jordi Savall nous convie se compose de sept étapes, « Prophéties et Evocations Anciennes », « Conquêtes et Naissance de Colomb », « Nouvelles Routes et Grands Projets », « La fin de L’Al-Andalus », « La Diaspora Séfarade », « Découvertes et Iniquités », « Testament d’Isabelle et Mort de Colomb » ainsi que d’une épitaphe. Le tout évoquant la vie de Colomb et son contexte culturel. Et comme le musicien le souligne lui-même avec pertinence "Les Paradis perdus proposent une reconnaissance méritée envers la littérature, envers l'histoire et la musique de l'ancienne Hesperia et du Nouveau Monde. Pleinement conscients que plus de cinq siècles nous séparent de ces époques lointaines, nous croyons justement que, de la même manière que la qualité poétique et la force expressive de l'évocation récitée des évènements les plus dramatiques arrivent à nous ébranler, la beauté et la vitalité de leurs musiques peut aussi nous émouvoir intensément". Mélangeant, avec science, Villancicos, Romances Séfarades, Lamentations, Hymne Soufi, Improvisations et Chœur, Jordi Savall et son équipe nous offrent un parcours d'une réelle finesse poétique au cœur duquel la lumière d'un passé oublié ressurgit pour éblouir une nouvelle fois nos sens et notre âme. A l'instar du Don Quichotte, la narration nous transporte au plus profond de notre émoi où la musique, tout à coup, se fait, à la fois présence et chair. La voix radieuse de Montserrat Figueras, (y a t-il aujourd'hui plus beau chant ?) s'empare de nos sens, tel un guide en terre divine. Au final, lorsque le parcours s'achève par l'inévitable disparition de notre héros, quelque chose d'indéfinissable nous habite alors, une force intérieure vivante et nouvelle. Le sentiment lointain d'un Paradis perdu, que ce voyage musical et littéraire a rendu à notre conscience. Magistral !
