I left this CD at a friend's place. I could not do without it for the few weeks it would take for him to return it, so I bought another copy.

I fully agree with the comment above - "the most fun you can have with your clothes on". The music and performance are simply exhilarating. Kitajenko leads a very bombastic performance which may seem a little over the top but it suits Shostakovich perfectly.

The recording is also superb. Instrumental textures are evident, as is the impression of 3D space. On my system, friends are astonished at the incredible palpability of the sound. This must be one of the best recorded discs in my collection.

As much fun as you can have with your clothes on....? Great.Same superlative recording and playing of some of the fun Film works type music. The two most well known are as good as you could wish for and the add on novelty is very much in the same mould as the other two works..An ideal introduction for any scared of Dmitri.Doesnt need dis secting...BUY.Enjoy.

Fabulous sound and performance!

I cannot recommend too highly this recording. Quite simply, Shostakovich has never sounded better than on this and its companion series of Capriccio SACDs. The two early ballet suites represent Shostakovich at his most iconoclastic, inventive and biting:- before Zhdanov, the Soviet State and Stalin terrified him into an alternate course.

Scathing wit, satire and playfulness make for an arresting listen. When combined with fine playing and irresistible sound quality, this one is self-recommending. The 3-dimensional coherence and staging - on hi-end equipment, at least - is just remarkable. The engineers and performers are both to be congratulated.

And don't forget the Kitayenko recordings of the complete symphonies - if you can still find them at sensible prices! Also see demonstration-level sonics and dynamics on the companion Lady Macbeth Suite recording (although Spivakov's reading of the Violin Concerto on the same recording is rather underwhelming). The failure of SACD outside Japan pains me...
