Performance:   Sonics:
Magnificent. This combination of a first and last symphony of a pure romantic and neglected symphonist is more than interesting. The 19 years olds symphony was revised 3 times and this performance is very much a mature romantic work for large orchestra with no signs of a beginner. The flimsy booklet in a similair package gives not much information about how much was revised for this finished version but its very much in the nineteenth century come 20th and not in the convential 4 movements but basically two main themes set as variations and rounded off in the final eighth movement with large orchestral forces. These are played without a break.
The first symphony is very easy to digest and would instantly please the Richard Strauss to Mahler orchestral lovers though it is pure Lloyd.Very impressive...
The much more complicated 12th and final symphony is altogether a much greater challenge by comparison and those who think this composer is second rate will be possibly eating their words after a few listens..This time a seven section work which starts and ends in tranquillity sublime.Again a large Orchestra and muted tone colours mixed amongst grander themes eventually the ending reminiscent of Strauss Zarathustras finale.
Interestingly this is my first sacd that is sourced from pcm that could kid the listener of its origins.Unlike previous Albanny sacds.
Included in the booklet is mention that this sacd has been processed by ZarexHD The same as other arrival Don Gillis sacd. They state they can produce surround equal to convential methods.
Another slimline booklet that feels like cheapo packaging but the end sonic result makes it all worthwhile..Best disc Ive had for a long while..have ordered more of their items including the 11th.
