Okay...I was very interested in this release as I am fan world music as well as a HUGE fan of Channel Classics.
I will start with the sound which is excellent. There is a nice feel of the hall, excellent detail, as well as a good spread from the orchestra with a nice sense of air. Actually, this is typical of all my other Channel orchestral SACDs.
The music itself however, is another story. Basically a collection of Chinese folk songs, the music ranges from very enjoyable to ahh, sometimes downright campy. The music has a good blend of western sounds with the usually expected pentatonic sound of Chinese music....not a bad thing at all by any means!!! However, some of the sounds are totally western. If I was unaware of what I disc I was listening to I would never guess some of the tracks were Chinese melodies!!!
Still, a fun if not stunning release!!! I just hope that this Channel in China series continues and that we get more releases with true Chinese instruments!!!
Enjoyable!!
