I had first bought this album on a midpriced Sony CD. Surprisingly for a recording from Eighty Eights, the sound was terrible, with compressed dynamics and very muffled treble, almost like if it was recorded in a tunnel. The back cover of the CD states that "Mad 6 was remixed and remastered especially for US release at Sony Studios, Tokyo". So there was hope that the SACD sounded better. And indeed, the SACD sounds very natural and dynamic, as can be expected from this audiophile label. It's a rather dry studio recording by the late great David Baker. Musically, this album (the best I've heard from Ravi Coltrane so far) is a mixture of standards and fast tracks in the "M-Base" vein. Very solid playing. I tried to order this JSACD from Amazon.de (where it was shown as available in 4-6 weeks), then from Hiroshi Tanno, my favourite japanese CD store (earlyrecords.com), and was finally able to get it from HMV Japan. It looks like many Eighty Eights SACDs are now OOP and getting hard to find.
