This is a wonderful performance with Goerne at the pinnacle of his career.
His rendering of the final movement is extremely touching. It reminds one of other farewells to life like Mahler’s Abschied or Strauss’ Im Abendrot. It is dying in complete serenity and acceptance.
Eschenbach knows how to mould the orchestra. His feeling for the long broad lines and climaxes is excellent.
The recording is one of the best I have. The sound of the orchestra is realistic, broad and deep.
Very satisfying altogether!
