Review by ggl March 14, 2007 (5 of 6 found this review helpful)
I've had this disc for about two months, and in that time I've probably played it more than any other CD or SACD I own. I have little to add to Castor's excellent review in terms of substance, but I will say that if you enjoy music of the period generally, you're very likely to enjoy the Rudi Stephan compositions presented here. Useful reference points may be the Mahler symphonies, particularly #7, and the Szymanowski and Prokofiev violin concertos. I prefer Stephan's music to what I've heard of Shrecker, Zemlinsky or the pre-serial Schoenberg; it seems more inventive, and more melodic and accessible. The first piece on the disc, Music for Violin and Orchestra, is to my taste one of the best violin concertos of the early 20th century.

The performances seem exemplary.

The two-channel sonics are outstanding.
