Biber was one of the greatest violin virtuosos of his time, famous for his cycle "The Mystery Sonatas", one of the most difficult works of the baroque violin repertoire.
The sonatas presented here from the Archive of Kresier castle are more proof of his mastery of the violin; Anton Steck is mentally and technically equipped to deliver them with ease and elegance without making the music sound just difficult. It is performed with joy of expression, assisted by some of the best continuo players one could wish for.
The icing on the cake is Georg Muffat's single solo sonata, rarely played as no other solo sonat of this great composer has survived, but it is, as Steck writes, a work of great maturity and an equal match to Biber's - the latter achieved to beat Muffat in their comptetion for the post at Salzburg Cathedral.
The sound is excellent, although I would have preferred a slightly brighter and closer recording.
