I had not heard John Hiatt previously but had heard of him.
This album is a cross between the sonics of a David Elias SACD and a Bob Dylanesque voice. John voice is gravelly but not piercing. Songs and arrangements similar to the new David Elias album.
After listening in surround tried to listen in stereo but couldn't do it. The sonics are great as you would expect from a pure DSD recording. Surround sound mix is consistent through with John's voice coming from center channel, and drums behind. No fancy surround effects just put you within the band and let you stay.
Music could be described as folk rock but with some rock/blues/country feelings. Emphasis is on the singer and his songs not on the instrumentation. Don't get me wrong though the backing band is excellent, taut and tight. A perfect compliment to John and his songs.
An easily recommended album that will get a lot of play from me.
This album is released as single inventory only so it should be easy to find in your favorite music store.

Master of Disaster, John's new album is a good one. It's his best performance since Bring on the family.
The sound quality is worse; the recordings have too much bass in the music (i missed a good midrange) and John's voice is shrel and cracking (bad mic in the studio?). Both mixes have this bad sound quality.
Allthough the mc mix is well done mixed.
Performance; good!
Sounds; a disaster!

Kudos to John Hiatt for releasing this album in hi-res as a matter of course. Here's hoping that starts a trend amongst recording companies. The music is very good, with his typically wry, humorous view of love and other things. And we get a very interesting surround mix, one that doesn't overwhelm at all but instead imerses the listener in the music. At first it left me cold, but I find it more satisfying with each listen. There's not much discrete placement of instruments in the surrounds, but this kind of music doesn't really need that. North Missisippi All Stars rhythm section is the backing band, and the music has that loose funky vibe typical to their sound.
Good stuff.
