Performance:   Sonics:
Great coupling - lacklustre performances and subfusc sound. Two Spanish ballets - El Amor Brujo dealing with the darker aspects of love, The Three Cornered Hat a bit lighter and more dance oriented.
Unfortunately El Amor is just too low key for me - the Ritual Fire Dance would only parboil at this intensity!
In fairness The Three Cornered Hat is more lively and successful, and seems to build up a head of steam by the end but by then its too little too late.
The sound is decidedly unglamorous - it sounds like someone has draped a blanket over the strings. Bass drum seems to boom through the resonant space and there is not much sense of space. Just listen to the stunning, "grab you by the throat" sound of the Mercury Dvorak Cello Concerto I just reviewed - how can we go backwards in 45 years?
