a supplementary remark: the best discs list for 2006
in the audiophile audition web magazin contains this
disc in the classical category. see

http://www.audaud.com/audaud/best2006.html

for details.

personally this recording is one of my favorite sacds.
i like it very much mainly for its clarity and the
emotions i feel when i am listening to it.

i could listen to it in stereo only and have no idea
if it is as good in multichannel as it is in stereo.

This is simply wonderful. Far superior to any other version I have heard, especially the recent - and disappointing - Jacobs recording. Playing is on a very high level, with just the right amount of 'rawness' to the sound. Soloists are fabulous, the choir is equally so. Conductor understands how Haydn's writing, especially in every one of the amazing choruses, builds and builds excitement like almost no other piece. Finally, and for me an essential, essential component: the recording! At last we have a recording that captures the magnificence of Haydn's conception and is worthy of that. I generally do not like Naxos recordings (their lauded Shostakovich series with Petrenko, for example, I find 2 dimensional and dull), but this multichannel SACD recording is stunning in its realism, scope and depth. This recording is hard to find, which is why I have not gotten it before. If you love this amazing work, however, it's absolutely worth the effort and extra cost. Great!
