Performance:   Sonics:
well Im no Opera expert even after 40 odd years of listening but I bought this having had to stop my car whilst driving just to listen and concentrate on something from a radio broadcast that was remarkable..It wasnt just THE VOICE which is obviously remarkable.,,,,It was this Cd....Not recognizing the Bellini work I noted it and sought out the cd only to find to my delight that it was available as SACD...I have had it nearly 7 months and noted it was one of the biggest sellers of its kind..So why a review ?....
Well firstly I slightly disagree with the posted profesional review in as much as the rarely heard Bellini work Il Pirata stands out to me more than any other of the more common works?.....
As regards the rest...its excellent,The couple of nice orchestral introductions help give you as break from the vocal tour d force and the selected balance of fast slow heavy light within the Bel Canto style has been well judged.
The recording states PCM but is very smooth ,the orchestra is not huge but technically seems spot on with additional variation on these extracts from just 6 operas by another mezzo soprano plus some chorus from a Florentine choir....As regards the quality in 2 channel. I was just slightly less than operwhelmed and wished for a slight opening up and more dynamism,I have to play it slightly louder than normal to get that "Live"impact and I do have a more exciting Opera highlight recording than this.Eventually I read the label and the extensive notes/translations etc on;y to find it was 48 khz/24 bit surround recording.Overall a well worthwhile sacd if you havent got it...One you will keep dipping in to...If your not an opera buff then Just to keep checking....what a voice...Dave...
