Performance:   Sonics:
Those accustomed to today's high-voltage readings of Mozart with fast tempi and vibrato-less strings will hardly relish Josef Krips's rather leisurely and expansive performances. But those like myself who prefer interpretations which allow the music to breathe und every detail to register will enjoy this coupling of Mozart's final two symphonies. While I prefer the more forceful approach of, say, Bruno Walter, this recording is most welcome. After all, there is only one other version of the Jupiter Symphony available on SACD (Runnicles, Orchestra of St. Lukes). Sonically, this stereo SACD is notable for its realism and for the pleasant sound of the violins (although not all edginess has been removed). It is a definite improvement on the redbook version (50 Great Recordings series) which sounds harsh and congested in places.
