I purchased this set of the Quartets dedicated to Haydn thinking that this was another one of the East German reissues by Avex Classics. The Avex reissue of early Mozart Quartets I found to be quite good, and I expected much the same here. However much to my surprise when I received the set I learned that this was a brand new recording by a Japanese Quartet, Quartetto Classico. The playing is quite good on all 6 quartets. The recording is somewhat closely miked, giving a fairly close and up front sound, but not too close. However the overall recorded sound is still a notch below the fine Lyrinx recording of the Quintets. And the price for this set makes the Lyrinx set seem like a bargain. However, this is the only set of the Quartets dedicated to Haydn on sacd at the moment. Overall this is a fine set of recordings, and worthy of a listen.
