Performance:   Sonics:
I've been into Krautrock since the 1970s, when I stumbled across a late-night DJ on a college radio station who played everything that was available at the time.

If your favorite Pink Floyd song is "Echoes" from the Meddle album, you'll probably like CAN. If you think the Floyd didn't spend long enough on the weird stuff in "Echoes," you're going to love CAN! Check out the 18+ minute "Halleluhwah" on Tago Mago. If it's your cup of tea, start collecting the other CAN releases. On the other hand, if your idea of music is four minutes of formulaic bliss, run away from CAN as fast as you are able!

I'm being rather stingy with the sonics rating because having this album on SACD is a double-edged sword. The increased resolution of SACD means that a sense of "murkiness" that pervaded the original LP (it was even worse on the CD) is gone. You can hear deep into the recording, and really follow everything each band member is doing. Unfortunately, the higher resolution means that you clearly hear the limitations of the recording equipment of the time, so there's some noise and distortion that comes through quite well, rather than being somewhat buried in the murk of the previous versions of this release. I do think the lifting of the murk more than makes up for hearing the blemishes though.

More CAN SACDs are supposed to be coming out. I can't wait!

Really good double LP from a band that really defined avant garde for decades. This single SA-CD disk sounds pretty darn good considering its 1971 vintage--no overt tape hiss or drop-outs, very crisp highs and punchy lows. It doesn't have the full sonic 'oomph' that modern DSD recordings have, so no 5-stars, but that's the only downside, and it's a minor one at that.

As for the band itself, CAN grooves like no other KrautRock band--this is one of their definitive releases; all these tracks are essential listening for fans of the genre.
