Ok I bid on an ebay item going cheap.Never heard of The artist and was suprise winner..My good luck.....SACD quality wise I wouldnt have expected great things but tonally this is near perfect. It doesnt present the recording engineer with any great problems but proves sacd can enhance the ordinary........Ive recently purchased two Dolly P items only to find plain Cds arrive. One being TRIO and the CD quality on both was exceptional ..this is ever so marginally better....
So on to Robert Earl Keen Junr himself....all songs were written by him..and this is obviously his greater talent...If you have every driven around southern USA and listened to Country Music Radio for hundreds of miles, you will know there are literally trillions of C&W artists writing the same music and often with appalling lyrics. Most dont even get close to rhyming for some reason.....This Texan is not one of them..Only a sentimental Christabel done in a half spoken / half music narrative gets close..The rest is similair to many other older artists, though some wobbly notes and off key singing adds to the entertainment. The backing artists are top class..sounds like .Web Pierce ? Hank Williams Jimmy Rogers George Jones and a few more come to mind..The extra 3 tracks are a welcome valuable bonus//The vacuum cleaner song doesnt suck either...only one average instrumental filler......This release HAS made me consider another of his sacds (if I can get it cheap) and reminded me that I aquired a dvda of Gus Black that was equally highly entertaining for next to nothing..(who?)
Interestingly the disc itself doesnt say sacd/dsd on it...The players sacd lights lit up when I inserted it and that pleasant extra tone was instant,The case is the normal CD effort..one small page of notes and a few details of the artists inside hardly ranks as the best production effort..
another star for sacd as I would never have bought this otherwise.and missed out...Dave
