Performance:   Sonics:
This is a great disc to listen to with a good single malt on a quiet evening. The playing is relaxed and sure. In the multi-channel mix, it is as though Brubeck and his piano are in the room with you, almost as if he were playing to entertain himself as much as you. The selections are a trip down memory lane for Brubeck, and while I'm not old enough to have heard them as new songs, the effect works on me quite well anyway. While it would be easy to relegate this album to background music for a small dinner party or other semi-intimate gathering, the nuance in Brubeck's performance is worth a more attentive listen. If you want to be transported to the 1940s, this is an excellent way to accomplish that goal. I recommend it for fans of the music and as a good introduction to the music for those unfamiliar with it.
