To be honest, I have never been a real fan of period performances. However, this recording (as well as the other Telarc Boston Baroque (Handel Fireworks and Water Music SACD-60594) has convinced me beyond a doubt that period performances (with real period instruments) can be incredibly pleasing and enjoyable.

Combine the excitement, passion, and just plan fun found in the group's playing and Telarc's superb recording quality makes this a serious winner for me.

I cannot say enough about the quality of the sound, with outstanding spacing within the orchestra. I will not bore you with the audiophilia terms like some silly magazine reviewer. The goods are all there combined with great playing, sound, and just plain fun..if Bach can be considered fun!!!!

This recording may well be the best single-example for why SACD needs to succeed. The recording is superlative in both two-channel and multi-channel modes. The performances will make you want to dance. If you are a proponent of SACD and a classical music lover, GET THIS DISK! I have listened to it five times straight since it came yesterday. It's that good!

I'm sorry to have to disagree with everything said above, but this recording is a third rate performance. No serious baroque specialist could possibly appreciate it, these people have the only merits to play well as an ensemble, basically in tune, and technically corrrect on baroque instruments.

For the rest, no musical or artistic liberty expressed at all, the interpretation is as flat and boring as the Suzuki recording I reviewed before, and there is no style, it sounds like a kid who just learned how to read, very fluent but speaking without expressivity nor nuances or inflexions.

And bad news, at least the sound on the Suzuki recording was amazing, which is not the case here, at least for the stereo part which sounds compressed even on my very open sounding Cary player. Hope that the multi-channel mix is better.

Any non-European good baroque ensemble out there?
