Performance:   Sonics:
Respectable performance of the famous concerto no. 1 with feeling. Scherbakov seems to be unimpressed by any bruden this well-known masterpiece might bring. He cheekily and playful presents his personal reading. Rhythm and tempi vary greatly. In my opinion, some movements are played too fast and are therefore not worked out precisely enough. At times, a little less speed and more precision would have been great. Because of this, the musical thread gets sometimes lost. On the other hand, the more lyrical parts are usually played very well.

The orchestra under Dimitry Yablonsky does make a good impression, however during the faster movements of the “Allegro con fuoco”, the orchestra seems to have trouble following the speed preset by Scherbakov (e.g. around 1:50).

In my opinion, the perfomance of Volodos/Ozawa/BPO (Sony Classical SACD) is definetely better and worth a look. My personal favorite is still Rubinstein/Leinsdorf/BSO, but that recording is only available on CD.

The perfomance of Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto no. 3 (orch. Sergey Taneyev) is very good and more balanced than the reading of the concerto no. 1 and confirms Scherbakov’s virutosity.

The sonics are good. The multichannel mix is clearly offering much more space compared to the stereo track. However, the rear channels seem to me to be mixed a little bit to loud and offer therefore more reverberation.

Also on the positive side, the price of this SACD (typical for NAXOS) is budget friendly.
