Performance: |
I've loved the performance of the 2nd and respected that of the 3rd since getting the RBCD release many years ago.
I have a hard time judging the sonics on this disc, but only because I have a hard time playing this disc! On my player (a Pioneer Elite DV-47a), the disc wouldn't load at all until I placed a green "CD StopLight" mat (an audiophile "tweak" from about eight years back) on top of the disc. Even then, half the time, it defaults to the CD layer rather than the SACD. Finally, while the 2-channel SACD layer is a definite improvement over the CD layer (which is the same Cozart-Fine-supervised transfer used for the RBCD), the MCH layer is virtually unplayable, skipping at a rate ranging from several times per movement to several times per MINUTE on some tracks! I've tried two copies of this disc, with similar results. From what I've read on other websites, this disc has troubles on many different players.
In short, I would give this a high recommendation if Universal sees fit to release a "fixed" version of this disc, but I'd only consider buying this one in its current form if you can get it from a store which offers refunds, not just replacements, for defective discs (and defines "defective discs" as ones that won't play on your machine, not just ones that won't play on the machine they may have in the store!).
