This album and the following "Laughing stock" (not available on SACD) mark a clear departure from Talk Talk's 1980's light synth pop. They are concept albums where songs are linked by long and slow instrumental passages. Instrumentation includes acoustic drums, harmonica, organ and electric guitar. The mood is psychodelic and depressive.
I compared the SACD to the first CD edition (a remastered CD was released in the 90's). The SACD sounds brighter and more transparent. Some might feel that the darker, softer sound of the original CD is better suited for this music (especially at a higher listening level), but the SACD gives fans of the late Talk Talk phase a more analytical perspective into the complex sound world of this album.

| Although I also prefer the Colour of Spring, this album was a pleasant suprise to me. The open track 'The Rainbow' is perhaps my favourite. Not a commercial success but I would say an artistic success. If you like Talk Talk, I think this should be part of your collection. The sonics are excellent: the ambiance and warmth of the recording distinguishes it from other '80's' or 'new wave' acts. I have listened on a friend's Denon 3910 player with B&A speakers driven through a Quad amp with excellent results. Recommended!

I own both this album and the Colour of Spring by Talk Talk. And I prefer Colour of Spring any day. This album is much more experimental and basically ended the bands career as a successful pop music act.
But still this is a great album to have when you’re a Talk Talk fan. There are some very enjoyable tracks on this album, but nothing that would have chart potential. These guys probably made a very conscious decision to leave the pop scene. But I still feel that’s a pity because the consequence of this move means a lot less people will hear their music.
Sound quality is excellent.
