Performance:   Sonics:
Punk big band jazz? Modern big band jazz with punk bass? Modern Big Band Jazz with Modern Electric bass ala Jaco Pastorious? No matter what you call it this is a very enjoyable outing. Lots of big name bass players doing Jaco Pastorious tunes with a pretty big brass section or big band where oddly enough jaco got his start years before Weather Report. This is tribute disc I guess since Jaco has long since left the building. About a dozen different modern electric bass players pay homage to JP here with very interesting results. Immediately after listening to this disc, I plopped HEAVY WEATHER into the SACD player and listened to those old familiar grooves from 1977(?) It is possible that JP invented the lead bass guitar style. Back in the day I did not hear what all the fuss was about. I was too into Stan Clarke. Jaco's playing just blends into the music so well that I had never really listened to what he was doing. I don't like concentrating on just one aspect or player in a band but if you deconstruct Heavy Weather you will hear what all the fuss was about. JP was extrodinary and this disc is special in that it points out that fact in spades.
