This one makes a case for having all of Dan Lanois-produced albums released on SACD. Sonically, this one is a feast for fans of atmospheric sound effects, be it tremolo-ed electric guitars, spooky swamp reverb or sounds of the nocturnal insects of Louisiana. It's a pity that there's no MC mix, but hell, we are lucky to have this one in DSD at all, just for the sound.
Guitars sound great, the bass is really punchy and the drums don't sound over-produced, unlike most 1980s-era recordings that I've heard. Dylan's voice is mostly a low growl without sounding as blown out as he did on Love & Theft: you can hear the words, which is the most important thing here.
Musically, it's late-period Dylan: the songs are either bone-dry observations on life ("Everything Is Broken") or ghostly vignettes like "Man In The Long Black Coat". The first 5 songs are particularly strong and fit well together. The second half does drag a bit, as the tunes are all slow-ish, but all the songs are worth a listen, if not always played back to back.
OK, so it doesn't compete with Dylan's all-time classics like Highway 61 or Blonde On Blonde, but it still is pretty damned good and it stands up well to repeated listenings.
