I have become a big fan of the Atlanta Symphony. I remember hearing them as only a fairly good orchestra under Robert Shaw (no disrespect, but he was a better CHORAL conductor than he was as a symphony conductor). I can back this up as a veteran of the 1991 recording/performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, as I was a member of one of the two choirs from Ohio State. After Robert Shaw, Yoel Levi took the orchestra to a higher level, all in anticipation of Robert Spano...who is now taking the orchestra even further!!

I bought this recording primarily for the Barber 1st Symphony. That selection is worth 5 stars. The sounds and passion make that piece worth the whole disc.

However, I have started to really like the works by Higdon and Theofanidis. I have not really listened to the Copland, but if it is as well played and recorded as the three other pieces, it should be just peachy as well.

High marks to Telarc for another great SACD, with excellent sound, imaging, and overall quality. I imagine that everyone will find at least one or two favorites on this recording!!!

Very good sound, but as with most other Telarc recordings not as transparent as the competitors (BIS, Dacapo, some Pentatone's etc.). I guess this could be due to Telarcs choice of audio cabling (Monster and MIT) - none of these are really top-class regarding micro-detailing and transparancy. Maybe it's time for Telarc to upgrade their HW?

Wonderful pieces (especially Higdon's) and a multichannel recording able to transport the listener to heaven. An indispensable disc for Hif-i fanatics and music lovers as well.
