The greatest jazz album ever recorded?? I think so. There was nothing like it 1n 1959 and it still hasn't been bettered throughout the intervening years.

I purchased the first Sony sacd with the multi channel mix back in the day. When I improved my stereo system I could not play the first sacd. No matter how high I turned up the preamp........there was never a bump up in volume. I searched for a new sacd and settled on the Japanese version which was newly mastered from a Dsd file.
The Japanese sacd was and still is an excellent sounding sacd. It has a nice three dimensional sound with crisp details. It has given me many a good session over the last 7 or 8 years. The Japanese sacd has a slight volume boost which etched the lead trumpet and sax playing nicely if a little falsely. The disc is also glossier in sound with more polish whilst the Mofi is a tad coarser in a good way.

Fast forward to 2015 and now we have the new Mofi remaster. This version is better still by a large margin. While I feel that sound improvement can be subjective and difficult to prove.......I think that anyone comparing these two discs will come up with the same conclusion I did. Namely that Mofi's sacd is so much more detailed, warmer and natural with terrific micro details only hinted at previously. Mofi's sacd's are also more relaxing and organic. The volume level must also be increased more than the Japanese disc which doesn't surprise me. The best way to compare the two disc is as follows: If both discs were puzzles.....the one containing the Mofi sacd would include many more pieces to finish. An apt analogy since there is so much more going on with this new disc. Its like another world. More complicated and simply more musical information garnered from the tape source. Outstanding really. The emotional aspects of this recording are better realized now as well.

As I am a huge fan of the initial Japanese sacds I still like the previous version......but in being completely honest and transparent........it has been bested easily by this new sacd.

Highly recommended. A terrific sacd remaster by Mofi.

However this new disc does not contain the additional alternate recording of Flamenco Sketches.
