Performance:   Sonics:
After a remarkable recording devoted to works for solo piano by Andrzej and Roxanna Panufnik (see Opus HD N°118), the pianist Clare Hammond looks into the “Étude pianistique” as a musical genre, with an original program that includes four works by four different composers. First of all, Serge Lyapunov (1859-1924) with three pieces taken from his 12 Études d’Exécution Transcendante, then Unsuk Chin (born in 1961) and his Études for piano which was composed between 1995 and 2003. Next comes the Ukranian composer Karol Szmanowski (1882-1937) and his 12 Études Op.33, then to conclude this fine journey, Nikolai Kapustin (born in 1937) and his 5 Études in different intervals Op.68. With energy, conviction and fervor, Clare Hammond defends these pages in a most inspired musical flow. Her virtuosity here serves the music and only reinforces the rigorous engagement of a demanding artist. A first-class SACD.
