Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of those special pieces that gets better with every listen. And you really 'get your money's worth', since it's long, chock-full of absorbing episodes that each have interesting instrumental / vocal combinations. It's hard to believe after listening again tonight probably for the tenth time, and being swept up in it again, that when I first listened to it I was sort of 'meh' about it.

As for the recording, I've only listened to the blu-ray multichannel mode. It's a good recording. There are large forces here, and the orchestral parts can be heard without any section getting buried. The chorus does appear to be audibly set back behind the orchestra. I haven't been especially excited by Naxos blu-ray audio discs overall, since I haven't had an example that reached the vivid naturalness of some other multichannel releases I could name, but this is a better effort and in this case I'm very glad to have the blu-ray. I do wish these came with a CD as well, so I could listen elsewhere.

In any case, this is a must-have and the music is definitely one of my biggest discoveries over the last year.
