The Band: Rock of Ages Japanese SHM SACD Stereo released 12-17-2014
This Live double LP released in 1972 was there first live album. Recorded December 28-31, 1971 at the Academy of Music, New York City. Not the tour de force as The Waltz but there first live album with an additional 5 piece horn section. There are no DR values for this SHM SACD, most values at 10 and a MOFI 2009 at 13. I would guess that this disc is equal to MOFI's ? I owned the original cassette but nothing other than that. I saw The Band once in 74, Day on the Green, Oakland with Joe Walsh and CSNY.
Performance: Of course a live performance has to stand up to criticism. This performance is really good and also serves as a Greatest Hits disc, the reason for my purchase rather than purchasing all the newly released studio albums, got to save a buck where I can. The horn section and THE BAND deliver a great performance and is a easy listen.
Stereo Sonics: As usual listened via the McIntosh and HDMI outs from SACD player to receiver. Was read at 88.1Khz. In truth a little flat and too analogue sounding for me. It was not disappointing, I just wanted a little brighter. When Robbie Robertson comes to mic to open show with a small talk I thought, oh boy, we are in trouble here. The music started to play and all was OK. Garth Hudson's organ solo is stellar. A live rock recording done in 71 will never have the wow factor that an audiophile might be looking for. 17 songs on this single disc.
Packaging: Cardboard tri fold of sturdy construction with plastic protector. Green disc. Mini paper Japanese booklet with 2014 Japanese writing. English lyrics to all tracks. Due to the mini LP the small print on inner liner notes are a little muddy.
I am very happy to own this and will listen again.
