Mahler's Eighth Symphony is a real challenge for the performers and engineers. The huge score contains eight soloists, three choirs, grand organ, massive orchestra and the off-stage brass band. Mahler said himself: "Imagine that the whole universe begins to resound". The work was truly something what people have never heard before. After the several CD versions I would raise this one to my top 5 list.
Eliahu Inbal is trustworthy Mahlerian. Recently he conducted the acclaimed Mahler cycle with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. The latest release - Symphony No. 10 in F-sharp major (Performing version by Deryck Cooke) - was recorded in 2014.
This approach is really the one of the best what I have heard in a long time. Inbal's passionate love for the work comes clear even at the beginning: the choirs loudly crying "Veni creator Spiritus" is simply impressive. Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra is very experienced band: the relationship with their leading conductor is admirable. The ending "Chorus Mysticus" raises to the air. There the performers gives their all skills for the moment: the atmosphere of the live concert is stunning.
