I have this and have listened to the sonata. Quite a measured peformance but not ponderous in any way. Rather better than the 2 stars in that German link, if not quite up to the rave review in Gramophone.

If you can get hold of it, the Marie J Jude Brahms op. 5 sonata is a better reading than the Plowright, which I found unengaging. The Handel Vtns are quite good, tho'.

Rave reviews in G'phone for English artists and labels don't count.

Although Plowright is English, BIS is Swedish

I'd take that one step further, rave reviews in any classical music magazine are compromised due to their dependence on advertising. I remember getting an e-mail from Fanfare promising me all sorts of stuff if I placed an advert. That's not to say all are based on this, but one should not discount this pressure.

I've always been more interested in the reviews or mentioning of titles in mags like Stereophile/HFN-RR.

Robert, wasn't thinking of BIS so much as English labels like EMI and hyperion. Regards, paul

I haven't heard this new SACD, so I will not comment on it. But I will comment on the Gramophone reviews.
I am always amused by Gramophone's bias towards British conductors, soloists, ensembles and labels. If they offer a top three list of anything, rest assured No. 1 will be one of the islanders. This does not mean I do not enjoy the publication, in fact I tend to believe it to be the best in the market, but I have to agree with you Nucaleena about most of their reviews: chauvinistically biased.

Gramophone often, although not always, does tend to prefer the home teams.

Just played the Plowright again and MHO has adjusted upwards, - more engaging tho still not great.

Has anyone compared it to this SACD?
