Ok - I bought a Sony BDP-s590 partially because of the sacd capabilities. How do I know if I'm hearing the sacd layer? I have it hooked up to an Onkyo tx-sr606 (via hdmi) - it is about 3 years old. Does the receiver also need to accept dsd or should it just play the sound coming from the bdp-s590.
I'm sorry for such a basic question but I want to know if I can get the most out of the few sacd titles I have.
If I can play it, what settings do I need on player - if anyone knows?

Thanks in advance,
Drew

I owned a BDP-S590 very briefly. The setting you're after is in the manual: Audio Settings / DSD Output Mode (page 29). The receiver will also have to support DSD. I'm not familiar with your model (or any for that matter) but there should be a display of the incoming signal type/sampling. The BDP-S590 will output 176.4kHz PCM otherwise ... this wasn't anything special in my system.

Here's how the audio settings should be set:

Go to Setup --> Audio Settings

DSD Output mode: On
BD Audio Mix: Off (Allows for high-resolution audio bitstream from player)
Dolby Digital/DTS: Bitstream
Audio DRC: Off
Downmix: Surround

Then to go Setup -->Music Settings

Super Audio CD Playback Layer: Super Audio CD
Super Audio CD Playback Channel: DSD Multi -- if you listen in surround sound or DSD 2ch if you listen in stereo.

Your receiver will accept a DSD signal. Now the DAC may convert it to PCM, but I wouldn't worry about that, especially because if you use room correction, which you should, the signal is converted to PCM anyway.

Also be sure that you've downloaded the latest firmware (run Network Update in setup -- you must have the player connected to the internet).
