Pre-emphasis is the most successful CD copy protection method ever devised, since 99% of ripped pre-emph CDs are being played wrong. :-)

It lifted the HF and, therefore, is not likely to have been implemented to compensate for a "hum.' It is more likely to have been implemented to compensate for a generally high SNR in the range where the ear is most sensitive.

Bringing that to a total of what? Long ago, I built a home-made DAC with a pre-emphasis indicator but stopped looking for an indication even though I know it worked with test samples. Not a big issue today.
