Hello All,

I am just discovering SACD, having heard some great sounding stuff at a friend's place. I have ordered a few SACDs, following the reviews I have found on this site, and can't wait to get lost in the music. However, I'm having problems getting my Marantz set up to play SACD. I have one SACD (Dark Side of the Moon), and have managed to hear the MCH layer just once. Since then I simply cannot set the Marantz to recognise the disc as a SACD. It's hooked up to an Arcam AVR600 via HDMI and up until now has been used solely for BD. Following the Marantz User Guide has not helped and I am getting somewhat frustrated. Anyone out there able to help? I would be really appreciative.

Thanks to all, and thanks for a great website.

In the Marantz menu you will be able to change the SACD preference setting from CD layer, to Stereo SACD layer or Multichannel SACD layer. First thing should be to check that it is set to the latter option.

You say you've only heard the multichannel layer once - was that using the Arcam or your friend's system?

Both settings are on "MULTI". The first MULTI is to set the media (SACD), the second MULTI to set the layer (MCH). These settings are accessed via the "Audio" button on the remote. Yet every time I do this and load the disc the Marantz reads it as a normal CD.

I heard the multichannel once on my setup.

Seems like the Marantz is not working properly then.

Seems that way... Thanks for taking the time to reply all the same!

I once had a Marantz SACD player (SA11S1) with the same problem - the player just stopped reading the SACD layer and defaulted to the PCM layer with all hybrid discs. (I could, however, manually set it back to SACD and play the discs accordingly.) The problem was corrected by a simple firmware update at the service center; took only some minutes after they figured out what the problem was. Not sure what the cause was, ultimately, and whether this might help in your case.
