News agencies are reporting Simon Rattle will leave the Berliner Philharmoniker when his contract expires in five years time. Perhaps not a great surprise he will after all have been at the helm of that great orchestra for 16 years by the time he leaves.

No doubt he'll have time to trawl through the German 19C repertoire a couple more times...

Who'll be the next, ahem, Führer of the BPO after Herr Kozena?

Levine? But only one arm is in working order.
Maazel? But most people dislike him, and being dead is unlikely to change that.
Gardiner? Period sound, indeed.
Lang Lang? Sure, he can't conduct, but he can sure thrash his arms around and appeal to Chinese consumers.
Kleiber is currently indisposed.

Thielemann vs Barenboim it is, then.

The Guardian are teeing up Nelsons, Dudamel and Jurowski, rather more plausibly...

5 years is a long time away. There could be 2 or 3 more Mayan apocalypses between now and then

Riccardo Chailly

Chailly, Jansons, Levine, Barenboim... Today's old guard will be a good bit older when Rattle leaves.

Perhaps by the year 2018, they'll have conductorless orchestras or better yet, a holographic Wilhelm Furtwangler doing the honors waving a laser....

And don't forget the flying cars!

There's a stubborn belief among some folks that, like Elvis, von Karajan is still alive and in seclusion.
