Arguably this is the least successful account of Mravinsky's 1960 set. Szell(1959) shows the playing, especially the inner movements, could be more imaginative in phrasing and articulation, and more flexible in tempo.

Disagree completely. This is perhaps the most successful of the 1960s set. It is also the one that has become the most difficult to attain. When I return to a recording of that era, Szell's feels smoothed over, with clean yet unimaginative playing. I would never look to Szell over Mravinsky.

I have this SACD and like it a lot, but I do prefer the Szell as a performance - what we wouldn't give to have THAT on SACD (as well as his Beethoven Fourth piano concerto with Fleisher).
I find that Mravinsky's urgency occasionally intrudes, especially at some phrase endings. The sound however is very fine.

I too prefer Szell overall. Indeed it would be great to have it on SACD.
