In a google search "Sony BDP-S270", there are some discussion that claimed that Sony BDP-S270 can not play SACD at all (or one has to buy the more high end model such as BDP-S370 at the very least, and so on)
Not ture! (I do remember I heard from someone here that the latest Sony BD player would be able to playback sacd, though no mention of any specific model).
I got a Sony Bluray player (BDP-S270) quite a while back from a garage sale. Today, just out of curiosity, I put a SACD (Bernstein's Westside Story - no CD layer) into the player and found that bluray player can actually playback the title. As it plays, the video screen show "DSD Multi" for the multi-channel layer, and "DSD 2ch" for stereo layer.
I can use remote to see control the playback. So it is sort of working as a SA-CD player.
The features so far missing:
1) title of the track are all missing. 2) can not switch layers for hybrid sacd, it only use the best. For example, it playback only the dsd-multi layer from "Bernstein's Westside Story", and I have not yet found a way to play the dsd-2ch layer on that disc. 3) so far, the signal is routed to receiver using optical cable. I have not tried out the HDMI, not sure what to expect. 4) the playback is stereo only, even though the screen shows it is "dsd-multi" - it is due the fact that I am using optical cable?
Nevertheless, it is good news, kind of!
This is my question, from the audio setup, it looks HDMI audio only have 2 options: Auto/PCM. How would signal be packed in HDMI? converted from DSD to PCM first?
If I get the latest HDMI equiped receiver, for example, Sony STR-DA1800ES, would that enable the multi-channel playback? Is it possible?

Assuming the BDP-S270 shares a common platform with the other Sx70 players and from what I know about those I believe the S270 will provide PCM or DSD, depending on the settings and on the receiver's capabilities.

For sure you can get multi-channel SACD playback with this set-up, at least in PCM and likely even in DSD, which this AVR supports.

1) This is my only complaint of Sony BDP; player front panel SA-CD track number is missing. However, it's consistent of all Sony BDP fron BDP-Sx70 to the current BDP-Sx90. When I first purchaced my S770 in 2010, I contacted Sony support(?) of this and their response was "use display device".
EDIT: I prefer to leave display device "OFF" for audio-only formats. Less is more on HDMI, IMO.
2) Change setup option to "DSD-Multi" if it's currently set to "DSD-2Ch"
3) Use HDMI
4) Yes.

Just got my STR-DA1800ES installed, well, the display shows that the BDP-S270 HDMI output is LPCM (176KHz); and yes, it is in wonderful multi-channel sound!

Now all you need do is set the following: 1) DSD Output Mode - On 2) BD Audio Mix Setting - Off
... in Audio Settings menu, and enjoy.
Also, don't forget to update firmware. That's very important for Sx70 models.

Just updated BDP-S270 to latest firmware.
Well, there are still only 2 options under Audio->HDMI(auto|pcm), and there is no "DSD Output Mode - On".
I guess that is probably what this S270 is all capable of then.
Even so, I am already very satisfied.

Coming a bit late to this post, but I just got this model and can verify that it plays SACD-R. However, I'm having a problem.
The multichannel tracks are faint and crackling (to an unlistenable degree), whereas the 2-channel tracks play nice and clear.
Is this a problem with my receiver (an LG that has no problem playing surround sound stuff through the HDMI) or is it something fixable with the unit?
Has anyone discovered a way to change between the multichannel and the 2-CH?
