Review to follow shortly but a heads up - one could believe this is the VPO playing. Really. A couple of blood-rushing-to-head moments of Jarvi (that aren't enough to spoil matters IMO) but one of the most tremendously enjoyable discs on SACD I've heard - it's hardly been out of player!

and one heck of a lot cheeper than Paul Paray's superb Mercury versions.

I already owned the superb Paray's Mercury version but this Jarvi's version would be high on my wish list!

Despite having the highly esteemed Paray, I am especially looking forward to this one, anticipating an enormous gain in realism with the modern 5 channel recording.

I can assure you that the recording (both in terms of realism and not needing to make apologies for the age of the master tapes) leaves the wonderful Paray for dust!

My question would be of duplication when it comes to the Paray. What do we hear re: music that is different from the Paray?

6 pieces are duplicated cf Paray (see Suppé, Auber: Overtures - DSO/Paray for those) & 7 are new to SACD (scroll to bottom of the "homepage" for this title).

A popular collection of von Suppe's most famous marches and overtures played with spirit and great gusto by this fine orchestra somewhat let down by a bland and rather opaque recording that sets the orchestra too far back in the stereo perspective so that you get a view from a seat in Row LL rather than Row G or H.

Often given free reign by Jaarvi the players sometimes allow their enthusiasm to go over the top which I found a little wearing; most definitely this is a disc taken in small doses rather than for one sitting. You can have too much of a good thing after all. Fairly I'd rate this as around 7.5 for performance and 6.5 for recording. Difficult to give it an unqualified recommendation especially with Paray in the SACD catalogue.

Not to worry. This stuff doesn't benefit from sedate. A little slam bang over the top helps.
