Hi,

does anyone have any experience with any of the official High Resolution music download sites that claim to have 192 kHz/24 Bit albums?

The reason i ask is that after coughing up almost $60US for the japanese SACD version of the Eagles Hotel California, i now found that i could purchase an official high resolution version for only $26US!

Hmm!!!

Thoughts anyone?

Regards,

Mr Wonder

You'll be pleased you bought the SACD when your hard drive crashes!

Hotel California remains a great example of 5.1 surround in a high resolution format, Mr. Wonder. I seriously doubt a $20 download in stereo would equal the experience.

BTW, I paid under $38 (US) for my copy and consider the SACD a sonic marvel.

Not a valid argument.

Data can be backed up, and many stores allow to download the purchased music again.

According to some reports (I haven't tested it), SHM-SACD break more easily than regular discs. I feel safer with data ;-)

As far as the original question goes, the hi-rez files can only sound as good as the mastering. That goes for any format, including SACDs.

I have the 24/96 download and the SACD. SACD wins by a long shot.

Yep.

The hard drive in my laptop crashed the other month. Got a same day appointment at the Apple store; it took them two hours two put in a new hard drive; took about one hour to restore all of my files. Pretty simple.

Well, I can't get Face Time on my brand new MacBook Pro RS and they haven't come up with a fix for that yet...

The marketplace is in a perplexing state right now. Sometimes downloads are cheaper, sometimes the SACDs are, though it's true that the greatest discrepancies are between boutique Japanese disc releases and their equivalent downloads (where they exist). Most importantly, there are plenty of titles that are available in one format but not the other. I'm betting on downloads for the future, and the growth in the number of desirable hi-rez titles available for download in the last couple of years has been huge, but I'm holding on to all my disc spinning hardware.

I won't be buying any downloads for the foreseeable future - I think they'll be seen as a big waste of money in a few years. I think they're a temporary transitional stage between physical media and online services before full on-demand streaming of hi-res audio from subscription services becomes widely available.
