If any US members of this forum want a copy, please send me an email.

I have to say, looking at the various pricing options listed from Amazon.EU, it's a poor advert for a single currency levelling out discrepancies!

No kidding! Well, I can make some US customer an attractive offer. :-)

What's wrong with it?

PT (a prospective non-US buyer)

The Sonata has rather thin, brittle sound, and after listening to the Variations, I realized I just don't care for the piece! It has far warmer and richer sound than does the Sonata.

Isn't it likely that the Diabellis were digitally recorded at 16/44.1 anyway. Also, the performance is not particularly special, and is hindered by a broken string, which, IIRC, happened right at the beginning.

Probably only worth getting if you're a Richter completist, who doesn't already happen to have this.

Thanks--now I'll never get rid of it! :-) Oh, it's not that bad, but have I limited space and can't "afford" to keep discs that I won't play that often.

I'm quite happy with this SACD, since I have the original early-90s CD release from Praga. The SACD booklet states 'DSD-remastered from the live analogue broadcast tapes.' The sonata was recorded in Prague back in June 1965 and the Diabelli dates from Prague, May 1986.
Praga originally released four Richter CDs, and I also have the one with Opp 90, 101 and 106.

The SACD sound is warmer than the CD, though this is more marked in the Diabelli. I also have Richter in the Op110 in late digital recordings, both from the Philips edition and a 1992 performance from the 'Live Classics' label.
I found the earlier Prague performance marginally more songful and flexible than these later versions of the sonata. Yes, even on SACD Richter's piano tone is less full-bodied than these later digital versions, but I found the digitally-recorded versions to be airless, especially in the upper registers.
Much the same applies to the Diabelli. I heard a digital recording of another 1986 Richter Diabelli, but didn't care for the airless and constricted high frequencies. The Praga SACD to me sounds much more natural. The jangly string starts from about variation 10 or 11, and doesn't bother me : it's far less intrusive than some sniffers one encounters during recitals.

Nope, I have 15CD Praga box of Richter recordings, one of better purchases I've made. In addition there is one or two separate Praga recordings (Grieg concerto and maybe something else), so that is 16-17 cds.

and maybe something else
Prokofiev 2,6,9

By the way, the sole review of this disc, which gives 5*s but says almost nothing about the sound, is a joke.

I still can't help but feel this entire Praga SACD series is a big pull of the wool over our eyes (or ears)...
