I have one CD that has developed a fairly loud background noise similar to vinyl clicks and pops, it sound like a worn out and dusty 78rpm, it’s an early Telarc Brahms Requiem/ R. Shaw conducting. If this is due to delamination the visual inspection shows no surface flaws.

You have to remember that some people spray them with all sorts of gunk, colour them with crayons and stuff them into their freezers for days on end.

I'm pretty sure there must be a sect out there somewhere that even buries them in mushroom compost for 48 hours in the hope of getting rid of recording bugs.

Damn fine way of growing your collection 'though!

Yes - I imagine you're right. That's what I gather looking at various forum posts.

I might be guilty of talking to my music discs at times - and I do worship them from time to time!

I have had some Hyperion and ASV discs bronze. There used to be an exchange program in place, but no longer. However, I do have a number of cds dating back to 1980s. No problems with the lot of them. Makes me think that what they said about discs lasting forever is pretty accurate.

Hey Progboy....
The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Sell all your CD's & SACD's now, before they rot away.

I have well over 2000 CD's and have not yet encountered any that won't play due to cd rot. I have many that are over 25 years old.

Aaah...the beauty of vinyl. Still sounding great long after CD's have rotted to dust! LOL!!

And each and every time you place the stylus atop the disc it dies a little........vinyl....archival?.....doubtful!

Bear in mind that hybrid SACDs naturally have a different colour (more 'tanned') than single-layer SACDs and CDs. /faq#discs3

I still believe the common sense approach is to store your discs in a cool, dry place....avoiding direct sunlight and especially keep them out of the car when they are not in use. They're a thin layer of plastic (or polycarbonate) after all.

This will also help reduce or hinder warpage. Also, avoid any fingerprints on the discs as any substance on your fingers may seep into the disc (I know it sounds superfluous but a lot of used discs have multiple fingerprints on them.....in addition to (gulp!) remnants of peanut butter and jelly (I've seen on many a rental disc).

I hear ya. But vinyl doesn't rot by just sitting on the shelf was my point. (not convinced properly mfg CD's do either) With a high end analog playback system, properly set up, the amount of deterioration on each play is negligible.

Jeff, there are bad batches of everything (vinyl included) and I suspect that you're correct in assuming that faulty manufacturing of CDs (and all 5" optical disc media) is the real culprit........but correct storage of all of the above is still highly recommended (especially Vinyl).
