The figures given by the RIAA, the umbrella organization of the US recording industry, for SACD sales are virtually meaningless. Their website contains a list of the reporting companies and the labels they distribute.

This list does NOT include Telarc, Chesky, Linn, Pentatone, Chandos, Naxos, Brilliant, Audite, Exton, BIS, Ondine, Channel and many others labels. Most of the member organizations appear to be affiliates of the major record companies (SonyBMG, Warner, EMI, Universal). If these cease to release SACDs the next RIAA report will tell us that no SACDs whatsoever have been sold.

You're right. The RIAA is a organisation for US pop music labels, and SACD has become a classical music medium dominated by non-US labels. So the RIAA figures are quite irrelevant.

It would be interesting to get SACD sales figures from big classical music retailers.

Im not sure where I read or heard it but isnt the Riaa is supposed to collect money or Royalties or something and pay out these funds to songwriters or whatever,I picked this up when I heard that someone claimed they had never paid out anything to anyone.Perhaps this is not a fact but it would be interesting to know if anyone on the forum has any factual information about this .Dave.

I believe the issue with the RIAA mid-year figures is that only single-layer SACDs are counted as "SACD". Sales of hybrid SACDs are lumped together with those of regular CDs. Since hardly anyone manufactures or releases single-layer SACDs, RIAA's figures is a misleading number. On top of that, mail order/online sales are not included and sales are reported by retailers who participate in the Soundscan tracking system.

The RIAA represents recording companies, not artists or composers.

Royalties of the artist and composers are collected by specific associations called "collecting societies". The biggest one is ASCAP:

In Europe, the equivalent of the RIAA is IFPI, while national collecting societies exist in every country (GEMA in Germany, SACEM in France)

Frankly, I was surprised to see that many single layer SACD's sold given none have been released in the past 2-3 years.

I believe the drop in (single-layer) SACD sales was something like 17% when compared to last year. That's not bad considering how many single-layer SACD were released in the last 12 months. Hahaha.....
