CHALUMEAU: The chalumeau was probably developed in the late 17th Century by Nuremberg instrument builder (and also inventor of the clarinet), Johann Christoph Denner (1655-1707). It was used by many composers of the Baroque period and the early classical music period for concerts, suites, arias and chamber music. It was the forerunner of the clarinet, but the two instruments existed parallel with each other through the 18th century. More at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalumeau
