I don't know this composer or this work, but it seems interesting. Anyone know more?

Here's a review: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2005/Sep05/vinao_arcanum_BISSACD1187.htm

It's a significant and substantial piece, well worth investigating. The review you quoted sums it up nicely. Some more info from BIS's distributer:

"BIS is pleased to announce the release of an extraordinary new album by Kennedy Center Friedheim
Award laureate composer Ezequiel Viñao (b. 1960). Arcanum (Latin for a deep secret or mystery) is
a work that takes the listener on a journey through the Bible, the Underworld, the Middle Ages and
beyond. Written in 1996, this meditation on the concept of time and the nature of knowledge leads
us into a mystical sonic realm. The two-part, 18-movement work journeys across 900 years of
musical sources, from Chant, Persian and Hindustani music through the polyphony of the Middle Ages
and the work of renaissance composers such as Machaut and Gesualdo.

"Our guides on the Arcanum journey are the Grammy-nominated Absolute Ensemble and Kristjan Järvi,
the Music Director of the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna who was named one of "Ten Conductors
under 40 Predicted to be Tomorrow's Maestros,” by BBC Music Magazine in 2004. The group fuses its
classical roots with everything from jazz and rock to world music and hip-hop, often working with
eminent guests from various genres. For this recording 11 Absolute members – playing the oboe,
trombones, strings and percussion (including tabla-drums) – are joined by soprano Janet Youngdahl
in creating unforgettable soundscapes."

I saw a documentary on the Absolute Ensemble some months ago, where they were playing their music from the album "Absolution". This is some amazingly rhythmic stuff, difficult to classify.

I know nothing about the music of the composer Vinao though.
