No, the earlier Japanese EMI SACDs were hybrids, and, as I mentioned earlier, the change to single-layer seems to be in response to popular demand in Japan. As far as I can tell the reissues in this release are of the Abbey Road team remasterings, as are the new titles.

EMI Music Japan (formerly Toshiba/EMI) will release 45 Single Layer SACDs of classical recordings from September to November 2012. The titles are as follows:

September 26, 2012 (15 titles)

TOGE15001 Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 8 (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15002 Beethoven: Symphony No. 2 / Die Geschoepfe des Prometheus Overture / Leonore Overture No. 2 (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15003 Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 / Fidelio Overtures (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15004 Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 / Egmont (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15005 Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 / Colioran Overtures (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15006 Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 / Leonore Overture No. 1 (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15007 Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 / Die Weihe Des Hauses Overture (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

TOGE15008 (2 Discs) Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 / Overtures (PO / Klemperer, 1960)

...

According to the latest information from EMI Music Japan and other sources, I revised the recording date and some titles of Klemperer's Beethoven Symphonies and Overtures, etc.

TOGE-15001 Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 8 (PO / Klemperer, 1957)

TOGE-15002 Beethoven: Symphony No. 2 / Die Geschoepfe des Prometheus Overture / Leonore Overture No. 2 (PO / Klemperer, 1957, 1963)

TOGE-15003 Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 / Fidelio Overture (PO / Klemperer, 1959, 1962)

TOGE-15004 Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 / Egmont Overture and Incidental Music (No. 2 Die Trommel Geruhret!, No. 5 Freudvoll und Leidvoll & No.8 Klarchen's Tod) (Nilsson / PO / Klemperer, 1957)

TOGE-15005 Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 / Colioran Overture (PO / Klemperer, 1959, 1957)

TOGE-15006 Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 / Leonore Overture No. 1 (PO / Klemperer, 1957, 1963)

TOGE-15007 Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 / Die Weihe Des Hauses Overture (PO / Klemperer, 1960, 1959)

TOGE-15008~09 (2 Discs) Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 / Leonore Overture No. 3 / Konig Stefan Overture (Nordmo-Lovberg / Ludwig / Kmentt / Hotter / PO / Klemperer, 1957, 1963, 1959)

On EMI Music Japan’s website, the recording date of Symphony No. 7 is 1955 and it is the last recording of the complete symphonies. Therefore, the recording used for this new SACD series should be the later one recorded in Kingsway Hall, London in 1960, not the earlier one recorded in the same location in 1955. Klemperer did another Beethoven Symphony cycle, Die Weihe Des Hauses Overture, Egmont Overture, Die Geschoepfe des Prometheus Overture and Colioran Overture with PO in Musikvereinssaal, Vienna live in 1960.

Weren't they all like that in the beginning?

At least in Jpn, but also the US CBS/Sony releases.

Yes, more than 10 years ago, all SACDs were single layer. But the market has moved on, hybrid SACD has become the norm even for audiophile labels, except for SHM-SACDs which is a small niche product. Non-SHM single layer releases are rare today.

Claude, if single layer SACDs were such a small niche, Universal Japan and EMI Japan wouldn't bother pressing them.

Universal Japan and EMI Japan SACDs are a niche. Do you think anyone outside the dedicated SACD-obsessed buys them?

It's a niche companies like Universal and EMI Japan see money in.

I kind of understand what you mean but if there are (say) 237 SACD fans in this niche in Japan how would the record producers know that and would they even bother with 237 copies? What happens to the others or is intended to happen to the others form a batch of (say) 500 - is anybody's guess?

In this situation the manufacturing cost of unsold product would eat up the margin on the sold discs and the companies would cease releasing them.
