Thread: Gergiev Prokofiev set: is there life after RBCD?

Given the almost total absence of Prokofiev's symphonic output from SACD, other than the often-heard 1st and 5th, I became curious as to the nature of the Gergiev LSO recordings (issued by Philips on RBCD only, I believe). Are they lo-res, stereo-only? This would be tough to swallow, for this recent a set. Or is there a possibility of seeing a reissue in a more audiophile-directed format, like mch SACD, to go along the the large body of other Gergiev LSO SACDs, or perhaps hi-res download? Seems like a plausible candidate for such treatment, but can anyone shed additional light? Thanks.

We're talking Universal here. There will be no MCH SACD release as it was done on lower resolution.

Is this just a general opinion of Universal's recording practices, or do you know for a fact that the Gergiev set was recorded in 16/44.1?

Given that they were recorded in 2004, the lowest recording resolution could be 24/44. Nobody recorded in 16bit at that time, even for a CD-only release.

There was definitely life before RBCD : ) Glad someone likes his whole output. I wish I did.

Current faves:

1: oh...it's unbreakable, who cares?

2: If one can get through 1st Mov't, the second is a haunting, lyrical gem; came across it late. Leinsdorf/Boston on RCA?

3: Abbado; not much of a choice for "good" sound on Lp, it's Decca or Melodiya, etc. Believe there's a Weller floating around too. It's all recycled music from "Fiery Angel."

4: Soaring slow mov't theme, another melody easily overlooked. Ormandy?

5: Easy: Maazel's dark but explosive Cleveland, expertly recorded by Decca.

6: Weller's is audiophile fav (bet it will be remastered for SACD) but it's decidedly low-voltage but Jarvi's Chandos electrifies. He gets it. Painful strings though. One of Chandos' last Lp pressings in '85. Then there's '60's Melodiya if you have imagination.

7: Can't listen to this one; find it depressing. What a terrible way to end a Canon. Of course, Martinon's on RCA will probably make it to SACD; it's been a TAS-lister for years.

Kitajenko's set on Phoenix Edition is well performed, conducted and recorded. I was disappointed it was not in SACD as was his Shostakovich set on Capriccio but the same recording team was involved.

No, not SACD, but I find the sound quality of this set to be close to the Shostakovich one. I recommend this set to any Prokofiev/SACD lover who is tired of waiting for more of his symphonies to show up on SACD.

sorry, for the 1st one I have never heard anybody surpassing Abbado (DG) And it is a beautiful (small) piece of work, indeed.

As I remember it, the recordings were captured by LSO Live who had planned to release them. Philips did instead, so there could be higher resolution versions in either the LSO or Universal archives...
