Discussion: Carmen Fantasie - Anne-Sophie Mutter

What's DG's strategy of releasing this on SACD? It seemed to me that they were going to stop releasing SACDs altogether. In fact, DG's website makes no mention of any new SACDs and iclassics.com only notes the Sibelius symphonies as their only other SACD release. But none of DG's big upcoming releases (such as recitals by Terfel, Quasthoff, Netrebko, Yundi Li, etc., and the Mahler 4th with Abbado) do not look like they will have SACD versions. Any ideas?

I've had this Carmen Fantasie SACD on my Amazon wish list for months now, and the page has morphed into a very strange listing with text describing a Sibelius set but with a picture from the Carmen album. These record company people are so messed up that they can't even correctly tell Amazon what is going on.

Ignore the text, the links point to the Mutter disc. At worst you would end up with the Sibelius 4-disc set for $18.98!

This was a good multichannel experience. The job was well done, but you still can hear that it's more multitrack mixing than five microphones. The stereo mix sound more natural, while the mc is a bit fake, with not enough "air" which should be the natural sound of the Musikverein, and a too obvious separation between the instruments (especially the soloist from the orchestra, though still a lot better than the Queyras Dvorak cello concerto).

We lack here what we usually have in the best Pentatone recordings: a ideal balance between more precise positioning and soundstaging, and also more mixing of all those sounds in the room without being analytical. This is what true multi-channel can bring.

So, 3.5 stars for the MC mix (though still very enjoyable, but there is a lot better out there).

All of what you say is true. However those of us who bought the rbcd and found it difficult to listen to (my experience with it) will find this is some but not a huge improvement. At least I can more or less enjoy it now where before I would wince and turn it off. I often wished she would have done the Wieniawski with piano accompaniment instead of orchestra. I had Oistrah on a Columbia mono disc from the Fifties that was really wonderful.
