Joan of Arc: Battles & Jails (Alia Vox)
Montserrat Figueras, Lousie Moaty, René Zosso, Manuel Weber, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hesperion XXI Jordi Savall
AVSA9891 Barcode: 7619986398914 2 SACD
“20 years after having worked on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette's movie Jeanne la Pucelle, Jordi Savall decided to dedicate this new album to a mother figure of the struggle for French independence. In this 2CD set, there are works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.), but also compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall paint the vivid portrait of a troubled time. Texts by Joan of Arc, including the record of her trial, are masterly read by French actress and director Louise Moaty. This well-documented CD/book demonstrates how a religion prepared to compromise all of its principles for political reasons also takes the risk of becoming an icon of fanaticism. It comes in a deluxe, full-colour hard-bound 420- page book (text is in 6 languages), with exceptional packaging, as can be expected from Alia Vox.”

Bruckner, Anton Jaap van Zweden / Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Symphony No. 8
2SACD | Challenge Classics | 0608917254921 | CC 72549 | release date: 06-2012
Jaap van Zweden is currently releasing the cycle of Bruckner Symphonies with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic for Octavia and Challenge Records International, with Symphonies 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 already released to great critical acclaim. This is the 8th Symphony!
"Van Zweden and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic gave Bruckner’s opening movement an aura of mystery, as the two main themes declared themselves before modulating to remote realms. Tightly constructed in a classical manner, the movement gradually moved from darkness to light, while the Scherzo which followed wove a thickening web. If the Adagio attained a beyond-the-grave monumentality through its intricate string textures and chorale-like sub-theme, the oft-repeated descending scale in the finale became a kaleidoscope of textures and colours. Bruckner’s brass is just as busy as Mahler’s, but its Moments of cloying Mahlerian fruitiness are short-lived: in Bruckner’s rinsed-clean sound-world, craftsmanship overrides sensuality, as this excellent band showed." - 5 stars, Michael Church, The Independent

So did they license the Cello and Piano Concertos from Sony? I'd love to have that cello recording on SACD, but I'd also want it to be done right.
